Former Pakistan captain and legendary pacer Wasim Akram has strongly called for Babar Azam’s return to Pakistan’s T20I squad ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup. Speaking about the team’s preparations for major tournaments, Akram emphasized the importance of including experienced players and suggested that Babar be slotted at number three in the batting lineup.
Babar’s Last T20I Appearance and the Strike Rate Debate
Babar Azam’s most recent appearance in a T20 International for Pakistan came in December 2024 during a match against South Africa. Since then, he was sidelined due to criticisms surrounding his low strike rate, with selectors opting for more aggressive options. However, with Fakhar Zaman sidelined due to injury, calls for Babar’s return have grown louder — and Wasim Akram is among the prominent voices backing the decision.
“I’d Definitely Pick Babar If It Were Up to Me” – Akram
In a recent interview, Akram stated,
“If I had the authority, I would definitely bring Babar back into the T20I side. With the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup ahead, we need a senior batter who can handle pressure situations and anchor the innings.”

Babar Can Adapt and Lead from the Front
Akram reminded fans that Babar has proven his capability to bat with intent when required.
“People forget that during his stint with Somerset County in 2019, Babar scored runs at a strike rate close to 150. He possesses the versatility to adjust his playing style based on the demands of the match situation.”
The former all-rounder further explained that in high-stakes matches – especially while chasing 140 or 160+ targets against top sides — a dependable batter like Babar becomes essential.
“He’s the kind of player who can anchor the innings while leading and supporting the rest of the team on the field. Babar is one of the best batters in the world, and he still has a lot to offer Pakistan.”
Third Spot Ideal for Babar, But Role Should Be Flexible
While Akram believes the number three position suits Babar best, he acknowledged that the decision should ultimately be based on match situations.
“In my opinion, number three is ideal for him, but depending on the overs and game scenario, others can be sent in too.”
“Back Babar – He Remains a Key Pillar for Pakistan’s Future Success”
Akram concluded his remarks by urging fans and selectors to support Babar Azam, noting that his experience, adaptability, and skill are assets Pakistan must utilize wisely.
“He has adjusted his game before and can do it again. Babar still has many years of cricket left, and he can deliver big for Pakistan in the future. We should all stand behind him.”
