Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has decided to take a temporary break from Test and first-class cricket. According to reports, the 30-year-old formally requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to grant him time away from red-ball cricket so he can focus on improving his fitness and performance.
Withdrawal from Australia A Series
The decision became public after Iyer withdrew from the four-day match against Australia A, where he had been named captain of India A. Following the opening game in Lucknow, Iyer not only stepped down but also spoke directly with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, explaining his decision and ongoing fitness concerns.
Back Issues Resurface
Iyer’s decision comes after recurring problems with his back and body stiffness during recent tournaments, including the Duleep Trophy and the India A vs Australia A series. It is worth noting that Iyer underwent back surgery in 2023, which had already sidelined him for several months.
Though he has not retired from Test cricket, Iyer emphasized that this is only a short reset period, intended to help him recover fully and prepare for a comeback in red-ball cricket.
Likely to Miss the Ranji Trophy
Reports suggest that Iyer may skip the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, meaning Mumbai will be without their experienced batter. So far, he has represented India in 14 Tests, 70 ODIs, and 51 T20Is, along with 83 first-class matches in his career.
Continued Focus on White-Ball Cricket
While stepping away from Tests, Iyer will continue to play white-ball formats. He is expected to feature in the upcoming ODI series against Australia and could also find a place in the T20 squad.
India is scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is against Australia between October 19 and November 8, where Iyer’s presence could provide much-needed stability in the middle order.
A Strategic Pause, Not Retirement
For now, Shreyas Iyer has clarified that he is not bidding farewell to Test cricket. Instead, this move is designed as a strategic pause, giving him time to heal, reset, and come back stronger in red-ball formats.
