Shoaib Akhtar Slams PCB for Weak Player Choices

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has once again raised concerns over the state of cricket in Pakistan, saying that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) prefers compliant players instead of tough, competitive ones. Speaking on a private TV program, the 50-year-old ex-speedster criticized the lack of quality in the team and the poor planning seen in the recent Asia Cup.

Concerns Over Team Combination

Akhtar pointed out that Pakistan’s team combination during the Asia Cup was flawed. He stressed that unless the team consistently fields genuine all-rounders and quality bowlers, the performance will remain subpar. Highlighting India’s example, he noted how their middle order stood up when the top order failed, while Pakistan continues to struggle with strike rates – an issue that has existed for the past 15 years.

Domestic Cricket in Decline

The former cricketer lamented the collapse of Pakistan’s domestic cricket structure, calling it directionless and lacking grassroots development. He argued that other countries have invested heavily in their players, while Pakistan has focused too much on management. “We were saying the same things in 2022, and sadly, we are still repeating them today,” he added.

End of Departmental Cricket

Akhtar further criticized the decision to abolish departmental cricket, which once served as the backbone of Pakistan cricket. According to him, with no strong domestic foundation, the country cannot expect to produce world-class cricketers. He also pointed out that even pacer Shaheen Afridi is struggling due to limited match practice.

PCB Culture and Personal Stance

Akhtar revealed that after retirement, he decided not to join the PCB in any role because, in his words, “whoever enters the board ends up leaving with a bad reputation.” He believes the system favors individuals who simply agree with management rather than those who challenge or lead.

Message to Mohsin Naqvi

Addressing PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Akhtar said that he has both the authority and resources to fix the system. He urged Naqvi to focus on rebuilding the structure from the ground up, ensuring investment in young talent, and reviving the lost culture of producing star cricketers.

Final Thoughts

Shoaib Akhtar’s blunt remarks reflect the growing frustration among cricket fans and former players who believe Pakistan’s cricketing problems lie not just on the field but within the system itself. His call for structural reforms highlights the urgent need for change if Pakistan is to regain its past glory in world cricket.
