Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has openly criticized the Indian team management after being left out of the upcoming tour of Australia. The experienced pacer questioned the selectors’ reasoning, insisting that he is fully fit and ready to play competitive cricket.
Shami Dismisses Fitness Concerns
Speaking to Indian media, Shami addressed rumors about his fitness, stating clearly that he is in perfect shape. “If I wasn’t fit, I would be at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), not playing Ranji Trophy matches,” he said firmly.
The 34-year-old pacer expressed frustration over the team management’s assumptions about his physical condition. He emphasized that his participation in the demanding four-day Ranji Trophy matches proves his fitness level.
“If I Can Play Four-Day Matches, I Can Play ODIs”
In a sharp remark directed at the selectors, Shami said, “If I am fit enough to bowl long spells in a four-day Ranji match, then naturally, I am fit enough to play 50-over cricket too.”
He further stated that the Indian management never contacted him to discuss his fitness. “It’s not my job to tell them whether I am fit or not. It’s their responsibility to ask,” he added.
Shami Included in Bengal Squad for Ranji Season
Despite his exclusion from the national squad, Shami’s domestic form continues to keep him in the spotlight. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) confirmed that he has been named in Bengal’s squad for the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, which begins on October 15.
The Bengal team will be captained by Abhimanyu Easwaran, with Shami expected to play a key role in guiding the bowling attack. His inclusion signals that the selectors at the domestic level have full faith in his fitness and experience.
Uncertain Future with the National Team
Shami’s comments have sparked debate within Indian cricket circles about communication gaps between players and management. While selectors continue to emphasize fitness and rotation, many fans and analysts believe Shami’s experience and skill should not be overlooked, especially ahead of major international tours.
Whether his criticism leads to a recall or further controversy remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – Mohammed Shami is not ready to fade away quietly.
