Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been barred from representing the national cricket team in the future. The confirmation came from Asif Mahmood, the country’s young sports advisor, who declared that Shakib will never again be allowed to wear the Bangladesh jersey.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Mahmood said, “We cannot allow him to carry the Bangladesh flag. It is not possible for me to let him wear the national jersey. My clear instruction to the Bangladesh Cricket Board is that Shakib Al Hasan can never play for Bangladesh again.”
The Controversy Behind the Ban
The dispute began when Shakib, who has been living in self-imposed exile, shared an old photograph on social media with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid, wishing her a happy birthday.
Soon after, Asif Mahmood indirectly responded with a post on social media, without naming Shakib, writing, “Many criticized me for not reinstating this person, but I was right.”
Shakib then posted again, acknowledging the situation: “Finally, someone admitted that it’s only because of him that I can’t wear the Bangladesh jersey again. Maybe one day I will return to my motherland. I love Bangladesh.”
Shakib’s Defense
Shakib clarified that his message was not political in nature. According to him, Sheikh Hasina had always shown strong support for cricket, and his birthday wish was only meant to recognize her connection with the sport.
Political Ties and Ongoing Exile
Shakib Al Hasan is not only Bangladesh’s most successful cricketer but also a former Member of Parliament for the Awami League. However, since the fall of Hasina’s government, he has not returned to the country.
The 37-year-old was also named in a case related to the killing of a protester during anti-government demonstrations last year, which further complicated his relationship with the authorities.
A Glorious Yet Controversial Career
Shakib, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, last represented his country in October 2024 against India in a Test series. Over his long career, he became a national icon with his all-round brilliance, but his political associations have now overshadowed his sporting legacy.
For many fans, the ban marks the end of an era in Bangladesh cricket. While Shakib insists his actions were misunderstood, the government remains firm in its stance that his deep political affiliations prevent any chance of a return to the national side.
