Following India’s reluctance to visit Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy, former cricketers have urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to take a strong stance. Former captain Rashid Latif proposed that if India opts not to play in Pakistan, Pakistan might respond by potentially boycotting future ICC events. He stated that, whether it’s a bilateral series or the Asia Cup, teams are often consulted about whether India wants to play or not. However, this is an ICC event, and teams have been aware of these event schedules for the past eight years. From 2024 to 2031, all member countries, along with broadcasters and sponsors, have signed contracts for these events, committing to participation.
The 56-year-old former Test cricketer referenced the 1996 World Cup, where Australia and the West Indies refused to play in Sri Lanka due to security concerns, which led to controversy over the finals but ultimately saw Sri Lanka crowned as champions.
Rashid Latif expressed that it would be very disappointing if PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi accommodates India’s demands once again or agrees to a hybrid model. It is worth noting that India has formally notified the ICC of its refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, which has delayed the tournament schedule further.
