PHF Breaks Silence on Players’ Allowance Row

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has officially responded to the long-standing controversy of players’ daily allowances, describing it as a distraction before the pivotal semi-final fixture against France in the Nations Cup. PHF President Tarik Bugti, currently in Kuala Lumpur with the national squad, emphasized that the spotlight should remain on on-field performance rather than financial disputes at this crucial stage.

More Important Than Money: Reaching the Nations Cup Final
In an exclusive release, President Bugti stated,

“Rather than shift focus to daily allowance-related issues, our primary attention should be on making a good show against France and qualifying for the final.”

He further added that success in the Nations Cup would not only be a major milestone for Pakistan hockey but would also qualify Pakistan for the high-profile FIH Pro League.

PHF Facing Financial Challenges, But Team Remains Committed
While acknowledging the federation’s financial constraints, Bugti praised the efforts of the players and coaching staff.

“We’re battling issues like limited international exposure and insufficient funds, but the players and management have shown tremendous dedication,” he noted.

He highlighted that, despite limited resources, the team has shown significant improvement, especially in terms of international rankings.

Ranking Improvement a Sign of Progress
Bugti took pride in indicating that during the present regime, Pakistan has climbed its world ranking in hockey.

“When I took over, Pakistan was ranked 18 in the world. Today, we are ranked 13. It’s a clear sign that we’re making progress on the right path.”

He called for the country and stakeholders to be aware of the progress being registered and also to persist in their support for the team in good times and bad.

Clarification on Daily Allowance Payments
Taking the controversy head-on, Bugti explained that it is the norm that daily allowances are disbursed after events and when funds have been made available.

“Allowances are never advanced. They’re done after the tournament and when funds are released,” he clarified.

He emphasized that despite meager resources, he is doing all in his power to ensure a better future for Pakistan hockey.

Call for Increased Government Assistance
Bugti wrapped up by acknowledging the received government assistance but reiterating that it’s not enough.

“We know the players are struggling, and though the government has assisted us, it’s time to supplement that assistance with the increasing financial demands of the team. If funding begins meeting our true needs, everything will run much more smoothly.”

Last Thoughts: Time to Support the Team
While Pakistan prepares for a high-pressure match against France in the semi-final, the PHF urges fans, media, and stakeholders to join hands with the team. Having the dream of qualifying for the FIH Pro League and hoisting the Nations Cup within reach, unity is the only key to its realization.
