Mike Hesson Upset as India Skip Handshake with Pakistan

The Asia Cup 2025 match between Pakistan and India ended with more than just a result on the scoreboard. Following India’s seven-wicket victory, controversy erupted when the Indian players walked off the field without participating in the customary post-match handshake with the Pakistani team.

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, Mike Hesson, openly expressed his disappointment, calling the moment “an unfortunate end to the game.”

Hesson’s Reaction in Press Conference

Speaking to the media after the match, Hesson said the Pakistani squad was fully prepared to uphold the long-standing tradition of shaking hands, a symbol of respect and sportsmanship in cricket.

“Obviously, we were ready for the handshake at the end of the game. It was disappointing to see our opposition not take part. We went forward for the handshake, but they were already heading towards the dressing room,” Hesson explained.

He added that despite being unsatisfied with their own performance on the field, the Pakistani players had no hesitation in following cricket’s etiquette.

Salman Ali Agha Also Affected

Hesson also linked the incident to the absence of Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha, from the post-match presentation. He noted that the atmosphere had already turned sour by the time the players expected to exchange handshakes, which added to the sense of frustration within the Pakistan camp.

“Salman and I even approached the Indian camp after the game, but no one from their side came out. The situation left a lot of disappointment,” Hesson added.

A Break from Cricket’s Spirit

Traditionally, cricket matches conclude with players from both teams shaking hands, regardless of the outcome. Even at the toss, captains are expected to exchange a handshake as a gesture of respect. This time, however, India appeared to overlook one of the sport’s most basic traditions.

Mixed Reactions from Fans

The incident quickly became a talking point among fans and analysts. Some saw it as a reflection of the increasing rivalry and tension between the two sides, while others dismissed it as an isolated incident born out of high emotions.

Social media debates highlighted the frustration of Pakistani fans, while neutral supporters also emphasized the importance of keeping sports separate from politics and personal grudges.

The Match Outcome

On the field, India secured a convincing seven-wicket win against Pakistan, further intensifying the rivalry. Yet, it was the off-field behavior that overshadowed the cricketing action, leaving many to question whether the true spirit of the game was respected.
