British climber Kenton Cool has set a new benchmark by conquering Mount Everest for the 19th time — the highest number of ascents ever achieved by a non-Nepali mountaineer. He overtook his own previous record, solidifying his name in the history of mountaineering.
More Than 50 Climbers Summit Everest in Spring Season
As the spring climbing season begins, more than 50 mountaineers have already successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest. Cool’s most recent climb was confirmed via a post on his official Instagram handle, where he wrote that he had climbed to the summit at 11:00 AM Nepali time.
A Journey That Began in 2004
At 51 years old, Kenton Cool first stood atop Mount Everest in 2004, marking the beginning of his extraordinary climbing journey. He has climbed back virtually every year since, usually on guided expeditions for clients who wish to stand at the top of the planet. His consistency and persistence have earned him great regard in climbing circles around the world.
Tying and Then Breaking a Record
In 2021, Cool broke the earlier record among non-Nepali climbers by climbing Everest for the 15th time, tying the achievement of American mountaineer Dave Hahn. He broke that record the following year.
A Determination Story After Injury
Cool’s accomplishment is even more impressive taking into account the fact that he was involved in a serious climbing accident in 1996 when both heel bones were broken. Physicians at one point thought he would never walk by himself again, but Cool overcame the odds and came back stronger than before.
Kami Rita Sherpa Targets 31st Summit
Meanwhile, legendary 55-year-old Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa is making his 31st attempt at reaching Everest’s summit, seeking to break his own world record for the number of ascents by one person.
Tragic Losses Amid Achievements
And this week also came tragedy amidst achievements. At least two climbers, one from the Philippines and one from India, lost their lives on Everest, reminding us that the mountain remains a perilous place.
Everest Experiences Record Climber Numbers in 2025
There have been permits issued to 458 foreign climbers for this season of Everest. Each of these is usually accompanied by a local guide, and more than 900 individuals will be making the climb. A giant “tent city” has been established at Everest Base Camp, which accommodates climbers and support staff.
Nepal: Home to the World’s Highest Peaks
Nepal is home to 8 of the world’s 10 tallest mountains, making it a major destination for adventure seekers every spring. Every year, hundreds of mountaineers from around the globe arrive to take on the challenge of the Himalayan giants.
