The ticking clock is making the ICC anxious as they must announce the Champions Trophy schedule by Tuesday. Any delay would violate broadcasting agreements. Meanwhile, India is intensifying its efforts to push for a hybrid model.
The ICC faces a looming deadline, with just two days remaining to unveil the much-anticipated schedule before the November 19 cutoff. Failing to release it on time will be considered a breach of commercial broadcasting contracts. With each passing moment, the ICC and the Indian board find themselves deeper in trouble.
Reports suggest that the BCCI is using false narratives about Pakistan’s security situation and offering extra dollars to officials from other boards. This is part of their strategy to either adopt the hybrid model or move the Champions Trophy entirely to India. Teams participating in the event are being assured that if they support the hybrid model, the Indian board will share its profits with them, giving them millions of extra dollars. Additionally, arrangements for extra matches with the Indian team are being offered.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has already rejected the hybrid model and has made it clear to both India and the ICC that all Champions Trophy matches must be played in Pakistan. If India refuses to play in Pakistan, a higher-ranked team should replace them, and the schedule should be announced accordingly. There is no question of moving the event to another country, and Pakistan will not back down from its stance this time.
Experts point out that back in 2021, when Ramiz Raja was heading the PCB, India had voted in favor of awarding Pakistan the hosting rights. Since then, until recently, the Indian board had raised no objections. So why has this storm suddenly erupted now?
On the other hand, ICC officials, caught in a difficult position, are in contact with all member boards, including India, to resolve the issue. Whatever schedule is finalized will not be based solely on India’s stance but will require consultation and agreement from all member boards.
