Ex-New Zealand Cricketer Doug Bracewell Faces One-Month Ban for Doping Violation. The 34-year-old was found to have used cocaine following a standout performance in a domestic T20 match for Central Districts against Wellington in January 2024. In that match, Bracewell played exceptionally well and helped his team secure a six-wicket victory.
The Sports Integrity Commission (Te Kōmihana Whakapono Hākinakina) confirmed that Bracewell had used cocaine, which led to his positive doping test. Rebecca Rolls, the Commission’s Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of athletes serving as role models. She stated that athletes have a duty to set a positive example and highlighted that recreational drugs, including cocaine, are illegal and dangerous. Rolls further added that addressing this issue is a serious matter, and the commission remains committed to working with sports organizations and players to tackle it.
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) CEO expressed disappointment over the situation but reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Bracewell. He added that Bracewell had taken full responsibility for his mistake. “The NZC chief reassured their commitment to supporting Bracewell, highlighting his acknowledgment of the organization’s standards as he progresses.”
