American tennis star Coco Gauff ranked world number three and seeded third in the event, has advanced to the semifinals in the women’s singles competition of the WTA Finals’ Orange Group stage. The 20-year-old American secured her spot in the semifinals by defeating Poland’s internationally acclaimed tennis star, world number two, and defending champion Iga Swiatek, in the second match of the Orange Group.
The group matches of the WTA Finals are currently taking place at the King Saud University Indoor Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In the second women’s singles match of the group stage, Coco Gauff delivered an exceptional performance, defeating her 23-year-old Polish opponent, world number two and defending champion Iga Swiatek, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to secure her place in the semifinals.
This defeat means Iga Swiatek will be unable to move above the world number two spot in the women’s singles rankings this week, while Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka will finish the year as world number one. This is Coco Gauff’s first victory over Iga Swiatek since the 2023 Cincinnati Open, ending Swiatek’s six-match winning streak.
