Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is unlikely to participate in the Sheffield Shield before joining Gloucestershire for the County Championship. The 25-year-old cricketer is still recovering from back surgery and requires more time to regain full fitness.
Green’s Recovery from Back Surgery
Last month, Cameron Green addressed the audience at the Australian Cricket Awards, stating that he was feeling much better after undergoing spinal surgery in October. However, he acknowledged that complete recovery from back pain would take some time.
To ensure a safe return to cricket, Green must undergo regular scans to monitor his progress. His focus remains on regaining fitness while gradually easing back into professional cricket.
Sheffield Shield Participation Uncertain
Green had initially planned to make his return as a batsman in Western Australia’s final Sheffield Shield match against Victoria on March 15. However, his participation remains uncertain due to lingering fitness concerns.
Western Australia has confirmed that Green will not be rushing his comeback and will prioritize his long-term health over immediate participation.
Availability for County Championship with Gloucestershire
Cameron Green has signed a five-match deal with Gloucestershire for the upcoming County Championship season. If his recovery goes as planned, he is expected to be available for the first Division Two match against Kent in Canterbury on April 18.
His five scheduled matches include:
Kent (twice) – including the match at Lord’s
Leicestershire at Old Trafford
Lancashire
Northamptonshire
However, Green’s participation in these matches is subject to approval from Cricket Australia’s medical team. Even if cleared to play, he is unlikely to bowl and will primarily contribute as a batsman.
Potential Role in WTC Final for Australia
Looking ahead, Cameron Green is expected to be available for Australia as a specialist batsman in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final in June. His performance in the County Championship could play a crucial role in determining his readiness for the high-stakes international match.
For now, Green’s fitness management remains the key focus, with Cricket Australia ensuring he makes a safe and sustainable return to professional cricket.
