Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana will represent Turkish side Trabzonspor for the rest of the 2025-26 season. The move was finalized on transfer deadline day and is subject to international clearance and registration, according to reports.
Manchester United confirmed the deal in an official statement, thanking Onana for his contributions and wishing him success in the next chapter of his career.
Limited Role Under New Manager
The 29-year-old has struggled for game time under United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, featuring in just one match this season. Despite arriving at Old Trafford with big expectations, Onana’s position weakened following a series of mistakes in past campaigns and the arrival of fresh competition in goal.
From Inter Milan to Old Trafford
Onana signed for United in July 2023 from Inter Milan in a deal worth £47.2 million. Brought in by then-manager Erik ten Hag as a replacement for long-time No. 1 David de Gea, the goalkeeper quickly became a regular starter.
He played 102 matches for United and was part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in 2024. However, his time at the club was often overshadowed by high-profile errors that drew criticism from fans and pundits alike.
United Strengthen Goalkeeping Options
With Onana moving to Turkey, United have already secured a replacement. On deadline day, they signed Senne Lammens, a 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper from Royal Antwerp, for €21 million (£18.1m).
Amorim now has three senior goalkeeping choices: Lammens, Altay Bayındır, and Tom Heaton. This depth could prove crucial as United prepare for their next Premier League clash against rivals Manchester City on Sunday.
What This Means for Onana and Trabzonspor
For Onana, the switch to Trabzonspor offers a chance to reset his career and find consistent playing time in a less pressured environment than Old Trafford. Trabzonspor, meanwhile, gains an experienced goalkeeper with an international pedigree as they push to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
