Former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has strongly denied reports claiming he is seeking Indian citizenship. The 44-year-old cricketer dismissed the circulating rumors as false and misleading, saying he has no plans to apply for Indian nationality at the moment.
Kaneria clarified that Pakistan is his “Janm Bhoomi” (birthplace), while India is his “Matr Bhoomi” (motherland)—the land of his ancestors, which he deeply respects and considers sacred. Despite his admiration for India, he emphasized that he remains proud of his Pakistani roots and has made no move toward changing his nationality.
Kaneria Explains His Connection with India
While speaking about his emotional bond with India, Kaneria said that his cultural and ancestral ties to the country hold a special place in his heart. He acknowledged that India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) provides a potential legal route for individuals like him in the future, but confirmed that he has not taken any step in that direction yet.
“If at any point in the future I decide something regarding citizenship, the Indian law offers a pathway,” Kaneria said.
“However, for now, I have no intention of applying. My respect for India comes from heritage and faith, not personal gain.”
“My Comments About India Are Personal, Not Political”
Kaneria stressed that his positive remarks about India have often been misinterpreted. He explained that his opinions reflect personal admiration and should not be viewed through a political lens or as an attempt to gain attention.
He added that he frequently appreciates India’s sports culture and values, but his words are rooted in sincerity, not opportunism.
Kaneria Opens Up About His Career Challenges
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, the former leg-spinner revealed that his off-field experiences were filled with difficulties. While he received immense love and support from Pakistani fans, Kaneria said he also faced discrimination and unfair treatment from certain officials and institutions.
“I always received great affection from the people of Pakistan,” he said.
“But at the same time, I went through several tough situations, including institutional bias and unjust pressure during my playing days.”
Kaneria hinted that these experiences made his professional career more challenging, even as he tried to focus solely on his performance and love for cricket.
Legacy and Ongoing Influence
Danish Kaneria remains one of the most successful leg-spinners in Pakistan’s cricket history, with over 250 Test wickets. Despite the controversies surrounding his career and post-retirement life, he continues to be a prominent voice in cricket discussions, often sharing insights on international matches and the state of the sport in South Asia.
His recent statement serves as a clear message: while his heritage ties to India are strong, his identity and pride as a Pakistani remain firm.
